welcome to smilekerala.co.uk

Hello and welcome to smilekerala.co.uk a site that offers you an open and honest insight into the rising trend of dental tourism to “Gods Own Country” Kerala, India.

My name is Mahmood , and I would like to take a few minutes of your time to welcome you all to smilekerala.co.uk and hope that you find your visit both educational and informative. The purpose of the site is really to demystify and reassure all those who have ever dared to dream about the possibility of joining the rising number of people who are now travelling to faraway places in search of extensive or complex dental treatments at incredibly affordable prices that offer, the highest quality treatments, patient care and indeed very high standards of cross contamination control without any compromises.

Having recently returned from Kerala after undergoing full mouth rehabilitation surgery, I felt compelled to share my experience with others who are seriously considering travelling abroad in search of dental treatments but who may be concerned, cautious, uncertain in any way. I am here to reassure you and hopefully to help you to alleviate those feelings that you may have in the hope that my journey and the procedure I have undergone will empower to make an informed decision to move forward without hesitation. In short, I have been there and been under the surgeon’s knife so I guess what I’m saying is that I should know right?

Does it ever occur to you why dental treatment is so expensive in the UK and Ireland? And how can the same treatment be so much more affordable abroad? If you ever thought that medical and cosmetic dental treatments are only for those who have huge bank accounts, it’s time for you to think again!

It goes without saying that the UK & Ireland offers some of the finest dental procedures and that these treatments are carried out by some of the finest dentists who are highly qualified and skilled in their chosen specialist area of dentistry.

It also goes without saying that the costs of private dental work that includes has not only spiralled out of control but due to the set-up and running costs the dentists have no choice but to pass these running costs directly onto the paying public. The costs of, consultations, raw materials, premises, rent & rates, equipment and huge staff costs are so high that the only way to stay profitable is too pass these running costs to you the paying public. Its standard business practice isn’t it. Whereas in countries such as India the running costs are negligible and therefore are reflected in a huge cost differential of the same treatments available here in the UK & Ireland.

All I know is that the last time I used a dentist in the UK I almost cried when I was handed my bill. It got me thinking there has to be an alternative as I’m going to need some major treatment in the months ahead and at this rate I’m going to have to remortgage my house or take out an expensive loan both of which I was beginning to worry me quite a bit, especially now that the whole world seems to be going through an economical downturn.

This drove me to carry out extensive research and eventually 18 long months I could research no more and finally made the 5,500 mile 10.5hr journey to Kerala to get treated. And that brings us to the point about the huge patient drain from the UK who are now happy to seek complex treatments in other beautiful parts of the world that can offer them the very same procedures at a fraction of the cost back home.

So what’s the alternative? Well here’s the rub, we all have choices right? We can pay for something that we really want in say, Waitrose because we are seem to have this crazy notion that there will be a vast difference in quality between Waitrose and any of its rivals but what we really end up paying for is the Waitrose brand name and packaging because it looks and feels a lot better than if we bought it anywhere else. Nonsense! The alternative is that if you can be bothered to walk a mile or so down the road to say Asda you might actually pick up the very same item a lot cheaper. In short, we can decide to pay UK prices and worry about the second mortgage or loan later. Or, we can simply choose to, at the very least, to explore the options of getting high quality dental treatment abroad, which in our case off course, means beautiful South Indian State of Kerala.

Look! let’s be honest? I think you would agree that the UK doesn’t have the global monopoly on highly qualified, skilled and insanely experienced dental or medical surgeons does it? I mean you only have to look at the NHS to see the huge numbers of doctors and nurses who are gracing our hospitals with their presence from all corners of the globe. Like most of our doctors, they are hardworking extremely intelligent individuals who come to learn their art, work and specialise in incredibly complex areas of medicine including dentistry before either returning home or perhaps if the NHS is lucky staying on for a few years to offer their services within the public health service and some even rise to well respected and very senior positions within our world renowned healthcare system.

However we look at this, one thing is certain, there are thousands of foreign highly qualified dentists and doctors who have studied at prestigious institutions throughout the UK, Ireland and Europe who have achieved their academic qualification and fellowships to some of the World’s leading institutions and have now for whatever reason returned to their native homelands to offer their skills, services and expertise to their own country and also to the masses of overseas visitors who are now somewhat disillusioned and arriving in their droves seeking low cost, high quality dentalcare all due to the costs spiralling out of control within their own countries.

So what’s the difference then? Well, other than varying levels of skills, qualification and experience off course, the real difference are the huge cost savings benefits. It will always be far cheaper than any dental work you are quoted for over here, even if you were to add the costs of getting your travel jabs, visa’s, return flights and accommodation it’s still works out between 70-80% cheaper than what you would look to pay in the UK & Ireland. Yes 70-80%! So now you have a choice will you still want to shop at Waitrose? I think not.

Remember the patient drain thing we talked about earlier? It’s a well documented gripe amongst UK & Ireland dentists that patients are leaving them to seek cost effective treatments abroad. Ok, so why don’t they do something about it then instead griping about it every day. Do what exactly, I hear you say, cut the costs of treatments! You never know it might just help plug the leak. Some months ago I was reading one of the national papers and came across this really funny picture of this horrendously long queue of people waiting to be treated outside a dental surgery, can’t remember where it was now, but this dentist decided that he was going to stay within the NHS. The news spread like wildfire that it actually made the national news and he soon had a queue of people outside is surgery that must have been the length of two football fields. Is this what our dental care system has come to!

There are so many people around the World who are now becoming real savvy and are exercising their right to seek dental treatments abroad with exceptionally well trained dental surgeons who can offer them the same if not better quality treatments in safe and hygienic environments, with excellent aftercare at extremely affordable prices.

As sad as it might seem! And simply put, it’s all about price sensitivity; the fact is that like most things if you need it enough you will pay for it. Alternatively, if you need it enough but sadly don’t have obscene amounts of money than there is an alternative and perhaps it’s time for you to consider dental treatment in Kerala.
